The mathematical sciences that form the foundation for data science can be found in a range of departments and domains of research. The domain expertise that supports the application of data science to real data as well as the inspiration of new mathematical developments, can be found literally anywhere. The affiliate members of the group range in their interests and expertise, from those that could sit in the mathematics department to those that have specialities far from the mathematical sciences, but who are nevertheless very involved in challenging data science problems.
Assefaw Gebremedhin is a faculty member at the Voiland School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at WSU. His research agenda is to explore the interplay between combinatorial and numerical algorithms in order to develop scalable methods for data analysis. Current interests include graph algorithms, network science, combinatorial scientific computing, Automatic Differentiation, and high-performance computing.
