Reassessment Information

So, you’d like to take the Math Placement Assessment again to improve your score? We’re in favor of you placing as high as you can in the WSU math curriculum, but there are a few things you should be aware of before you take the assessment again:

  • Because it is an assessment—not a fixed test like the SAT or an AP exam—you cannot improve your results simply by retaking the assessment. Unless you spend time improving your mathematical understanding, it’s unlikely your score will change significantly.
  • Before you take the assessment again, you are required to spend time working in the ALEKS prep and learning module to refresh material you may have forgotten and/or to learn new material.
  • Check your computer and browser meet the system requirements for the required proctoring software.

All reassessments for WSU Pullman must be proctored using the Respondus LockDown Browser.

Up to four reassessments

Your ALEKS account offers the opportunity to improve your understanding and take the assessment again.

Time constraints

You must access your Prep and Learning Module within six months after your initial assessment. You then have six months from when you first open the module to complete your required hours before taking your reassessment.

The amount of time you have to complete your reassessment depends on when you sign in for the first time. All reassessments must be taken during your placement cohort, which you are automatically added to when you sign in to ALEKS.

  • For students starting in the fall semester: March 1 to February 28 of the following year.
  • For students starting in spring semester: October 1 to September 30 of the following year.

If you do not enter your learning module within six months after taking your initial assessment and later wish to reassess for a better score, you will have to start over with the placement process.

Sign up to take the assessment again

  • Go to Take the Assessment page and select your campus.
  • Select the “If you are returning…” option.
    When you sign in, a link to the Prep and Learning Module will be on your ALEKS homepage.
  • Access to start your reassessment will “unlock” after you complete your required hours in this module.

Preparing for your reassessment

  • Learning module hours must be completed within six months of your most recent assessment.
  • The ALEKS system will automatically track the time you spend in the Module and the re-assessment will “unlock” when the time requirements have been met.
  • Prior to your first reassessment: you must spend 3 hours using the ALEKS Prep and Learning Module.
  • Prior to your second reassessment: you must spend an additional 5 hours working in the learning module.

Online proctoring is required

Review technical requirements and start up instructions for the ALEKS Respondus LockDown Browser. Starting March 15, 2026, this is required for students on all WSU campuses for all assessments.

Highest score retained

If you retake the assessment within 12 months and score lower than earlier attempts, your highest score will be retain.

If it’s been more than 12 months since you have taken the assessment, your new score will supersede your previous score.

No cost for reassessment

There is no additional fee. The fee paid for your initial assessment includes access to the prep and learning module and up to four reassessments.

However, if it has been longer than six months since your most recent assessment, you will need reactivate your ALEKS account as if you were a first-time-user. Reactivation will charge another $50 to your WSU account.

Note: If it has been longer than 6 months since your last assessment, you will need use the “first time access” link after selecting your campus.
