The eleven students from Cusick are participants in a collaborative tutoring program between the WSU Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Camas Learning Center (CLC), an in-school and after-school program managed by the Kalispel Tribe. They were invited to the IBS conference by Regents Professor Jan Dasgupta, department chairperson and the current president of the IBS western North American region. Dasgupta saw an opportunity to share the Pullman academic experience with both leading researchers and the students tutored by her undergraduate students.

As part of the partnership, AGH has established 10 Erasmus+ fellowships — five for students and five for faculty members — to WSU faculty and students. Iannelli, along with Sergey Lapin, professor of mathematics and statistics at WSU Everett and director of WSU’s data analytics program, received support to visit AGH during the first week of June. While there, the WSU professors further explored research collaboration ideas, namely in the fields of applied mathematics education and computational space flight dynamics.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is hosting a retirement celebration for Dr. Krishna Jandhyala. The celebration will be Thursday, May 8th from 2-4 PM in the Honors Hall Lounge.

Molly Sutter, a PhD candidate in the department, was recently awarded the Harriet B. Rigas Outstanding Woman in Doctoral Studies Award by the Association for Faculty Women.

Ari Ariyawansa, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and former Chair of the Department of Mathematics at Washington State University (WSU), passed away in April 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Several of our faculty and students have been recognized for their achievements.

In December 2023, Professor Stephen Kirkland of the University of Manitoba delivered the Calvin and Jean Long Lecture.

Congratulations to five of our faculty members who were granted promotions this past academic year, effective August 16, 2024. The department is very proud of these well-deserved promotions.

The 2024 College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Senior from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is Liam Crafton.

In the fall of 2023, Washington State University sent its first cohort of students to Sweden under the National Science Foundation-funded Student Training and Research Semesters in Sweden (STARS.SE) program.

Mathematicians and statisticians from around the world descended onto Pullman to attend the regional conference of the International Biometric Society (IBS) in early June. Kalispel students were invited to join them.

Seventy-three students at the Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (SURCA) 2026 were the recipients of 65 awards totaling $14,000.

Washington State University researchers have received a three-year National Science Foundation grant that will train U.S. and Swedish students in cybersecurity research for artificial intelligence (AI) applications.
