We are pleased to announce the following seven Mathematics majors who have received either a Hacker Research Scholarship or the Auvil Research Scholarship.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics congratulates five faculty members who have received tenure and/or promotions effective August 16th, 2025.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is hosting a retirement celebration for Dr. Krishna Jandhyala. The celebration will be Thursday, May 8th from 2-4 PM in the Honors Hall Lounge.

Molly Sutter, a PhD candidate in the department, was recently awarded the Harriet B. Rigas Outstanding Woman in Doctoral Studies Award by the Association for Faculty Women.

Ari Ariyawansa, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and former Chair of the Department of Mathematics at Washington State University (WSU), passed away in April 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Several of our faculty and students have been recognized for their achievements.

In December 2023, Professor Stephen Kirkland of the University of Manitoba delivered the Calvin and Jean Long Lecture.

Congratulations to five of our faculty members who were granted promotions this past academic year, effective August 16, 2024. The department is very proud of these well-deserved promotions.

The 2024 College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Senior from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is Liam Crafton.

Our student clubs have been active this year in scheduling intellectual and social events.

In the fall of 2023, Washington State University sent its first cohort of students to Sweden under the National Science Foundation-funded Student Training and Research Semesters in Sweden (STARS.SE) program.

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition began in Australia as a way for students to learn to succinctly express the content of their research to an audience of non-specialists.

Washington State University researchers have received a three-year National Science Foundation grant that will train U.S. and Swedish students in cybersecurity research for artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

Soon-to-be graduates from across the WSU system are being recognized by the Alumni Association for their outstanding achievements in their classrooms and local communities as well as for their athletic and artistic ventures.
