Our student clubs have been active this year in scheduling intellectual and social events. These contribute significantly to the camaraderie and welcoming environment of the department, in addition to being a lot of fun. These clubs sponsored and organized an array of events as highlighted below.
The American Mathematical Society (AMS) Graduate Student Chapter
- Held a department tea on September 8
- Hosted “Integrals and Ice Cream” on October 13, which featured WSU’s Ferdinand’s ice cream and some challenging calculus problems
- Organized a Star Party October 21 at the Jewett Observatory, that was unfortunately cancelled due to weather
- Sponsored a math trivia contest on November 3
- Organized the “Math Mania Fiesta Quest” that featured games, such as liar dice, mancala, and ultimate tic-tac-toe, on February 2
- Served drinks and snacks at the “Last Tea of the Year” on December 8
- Held a department tea on March 28
- Designed department hoodies (see below)
The American Statistical Association (ASA)
- Co-hosted, with CISER, an R workshop for general WSU audiences on October 1 and October 8
- Held a department social on October 6
- Sponsored “Statsgiving” on November 15, with pizza, donuts, and drinks
- Organized the department’s 3-Minute Thesis competition on November 28, which also included a build-your-own taco bar
- Hosted a social with sandwiches and ice cream on January 25
- Held an ice cream social on February 23
- Organized a WSU statistics alumni panel on Zoom to engage current students with alumni to talk about life after grad school
- Intrigued us with interesting facts about probability at “Probability and Pizza” on March 1
- Organized a lunch social, catered by Jimmy Johns on March 28
- Hosted Alice Zhou from Amazon, who spoke on March 29 about “her personal journey as a statistician navigating the dynamic landscape of different Amazon divisions for seven years, climbing the ranks with four promotions”; this included a lunch catered by Chipotle
- Designed “Beta Hat” beanies (see below)
The Association of Women in Mathematics (AWM)
- Held a social on September 20
- Sponsored pumpkin painting on October 26
- Organized an ice cream social on April 22
