Dear Alumni, Friends, Colleagues, and Students,
Welcome to the 2023–2024 edition of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics newsletter. As always, we have a lot to boast about in this edition.
This year the Long Lecture and the Ostrom Lecture were delivered by two internationally prominent mathematicians, following the long tradition of those series. This is in addition to our robust schedule of colloquia and seminars, all of which contribute to the vibrant research environment of the department.
This past fall semester, one of our mathematics majors was selected to participate in an overseas semester at Sweden’s Linköping University, and two of our majors have been selected to the same program for the fall of 2024.
One of our graduate students won the outstanding PhD student award from the Association for Faculty Women, and another placed third in a college-level competition.
Our department faculty has had a good year. Faculty are very active in research and receive invitations to speak at conferences throughout the world. Three faculty members were recognized by the College of Arts and Sciences for their achievements, and five faculty members received promotions.
Sadly, this year we lost Emeritus Professor Jan Kucera who gave years of dedicated service to the department and to WSU. We also lost Emeritus Professor Ari Ariyawansa, a member of the department from 1983 until 2013, who served as chair from 2008 to 2013.
We love to know what our graduates and friends are doing. Please send us an email to let us know of the recent, and even not-so-recent, events in your life and career. Follow us on Facebook or connect to our LinkedIn page and keep in touch.
We appreciate our alumni, friends, and all who are associated with the department in some way. You all have contributed to the success of the department and the students we teach.
Sincerely,
Charles Moore
Professor and Department Chair
