Welcome from Leadership

We are the core academic department at Washington State University: we provide foundational quantitative learning for all students, teach a broad range of math, stats, and data analytics courses for our undergraduate majors and for all STEM degrees at WSU, and we are one of only two mathematics PhD-granting departments in the state.

We are committed to teaching and research excellence and to preparing students at all levels for professional success. Many career rankings, based on factors such as working environment and salary, put mathematician, statistician, data scientist, and actuary near the top. Our department offers training in all these areas. Our graduates go on to good positions in industry, government, or higher education.

Our faculty are active researchers at the forefront of current global interests and are making discoveries in the areas of mathematical modeling, optimization, partial differential equations, statistics, mathematics education, data analytics, discrete mathematics, mathematical biology, numerical analysis, analysis and geometric measure theory, and linear algebra. Our faculty collaborate with researchers in many other disciplines—within Washington State University, at other colleges and universities, and at federal research laboratories.
